Where we came from

BECI was founded by a group of enthusiastic 15 women and 5 men. This group that lived in the community of Mathare is impacted by a myriad of challenges wanted to bring change and impact lives in their own small ways. One of the Issue that the group was passionate about was preventing Gender based violence that is prevalent in low income settlements
  • November 2023: Official registration under the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection as a Community-Based Organization (CBO).
  • February 2024: Officially partnered with Nafasi Opportunity Society and launched our first community empowerment program focused on financially empowering young, marginalized women in Mathare affected by gender-based violence primarily due to their lack of financial independence. Our three month programs focused on providing business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as select vocational skills such as hairstyling, tailoring, and soap and beauty product manufacturing. We eliminated barriers of participation by providing free daycare and meals at our workshops.
  • July 2024: Partnered with the University of British Columbia’s Leadership, Innovation, Fundamentals and Training (LIFT) program to help provide high-quality and community-specific small-business ownership skills.
  • August 2024: Successfully implemented a pilot project on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights reaching over 200 youth in the informal settlements of Nairobi. Supported by Plan International and Nafasi opportunity Society.
  • October 2024: Graduated 110 young, marginalized women from our inaugural financial empowerment program who were provided with work attachments and start-up business kits to immediately kick-start income generation. Officially partnered with MUWWA who provide mentorship, work opportunities, and resources to our hairstyling graduates.
  • December 2023: Initiated a climate action campaign, engaging over 120 community members in making reusable sanitary pads, diapers, tree planting and waste management activities.

Who we are

Build and Enlighten Communities Initiative (BECI) is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) was started in 2023 march and was registered in November 2023 srhr was implemented in April 2023 under the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection in Kenya. BECI is committed to addressing the root causes of these challenges through targeted interventions that focus on gender equality, health, sustainable livelihoods, and climate action. The organization engages women and youth in the community, including young mothers, fathers, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), by equipping them with essential life skills to become self-reliant. BECI’s inclusive approach ensures that its programs serve all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation, religion, or tribe.
